The Pediatric Unit is a multidisciplinary division that has been established in 2007 to provide quality health service to children requiring specialty care. It has a 15-bed unit providing care to private patients and 6 bed dedicated to pediatric service patients. The Pediatric Unit is composed of pediatric pulmonologists, infectious disease, critical care, cardiology, neurology, allergology, oncology/hematology, and nephrology. Its outpatient services, while mainly focusing on childhood tubercolosis and oncology also include private clinincs to cater to basic needs of a pediatric patient and dependents of LCP employees.

In 2007, an invitation was given to Dr. Cristan Cabanilla to spearhead in the formation of the team that would provide care to the infants and children at the Lung Center of the Philippines. His genius and foresight extended this invitation to five young minds: Drs. Anjanette De Leon, Arlene Dy-Co, Gilda Sapphire Erguiza, Ma. Theresa Lorenzo and Christine Sua. The immediate role then was to provide care to patients with tubercolosis and start the DOTS in children.

In 2008, the group became bigger, expanding service to the thoracic surgical/oncologic cases. Admission for pediatric patients was now opened. The dilemma then was the unavailability of manpower to act as the caretakers of admitted patients. Thus, junior consultants, acting as fellows, filled in this gap.

d   In 2009, the Pediatric Unit was opened providing an increase of adnissions of patients with pulmonary and general pediatric cases. It was now recognized as an independent area eith its own staff and composition. The organizational chart was formulated dividing itself into different teams: DOTSCh, MDRTB, General ICU and Pulmonary Critical Care, Thoracic Surgery, Bronchoscopy, and Education & Training. The addition of medical staff composed of different subspecialty areas in Pediatrics which will provide a critical role in the management of the area has now been put into place.

In 2010, the Unit has now participated in various activities of the hospital including grand grounds, seminars and postgraduate courses. The Unit has now been recognized by the different Departments involving themselves in accreditation, participation in different hospital committee meetings and strategic planning.
